Welcome to Night School.

Night School is Will Packer and Jimmy Zenger-Atienza. The project was born in the two educators’ Harlem apartment in 2015. Their 2017 debut album, Straight Through the Night, on which they are joined by Chris Mastrocola on drums and percussion and Manjula Raman on vocals and keyboards, was inspired by the progressive bands of the 1970’s and 80’s and the limitless potential of electronic music. Their second album, Imago, released in 2021, is the culmination of three years of on-and-off work exploring Afro-Latin rhythms, contemporary electronic instrumentation, and European classical forms.

Hi friends, family, and music fans! Night School is back with some new music for your enjoyment tonight. This album, Imago, is the culmination of three years of on-and-off work as a duo since our first album, Straight Through the Night. These three movements developed to have both sonic and metaphorical resonance with the idea of periodic cicadas. They spend 17 years underground, and then emerge as adults, quite loudly (to our dismay but perhaps their delight?). Latin for ‘image,’ the term imago is used to describe the fully developed form of an insect or an idealized mental image of a person. Over the past year it has been hard not to put our emotions and desires into the music. It came to represent us, and all of you, biding our time during this pandemic and doing what’s necessary so that one day when we do all come out we can — more truly than before — live together. Thanks to everyone who has contributed to making this album, especially @astrolith , who mixed and mastered it and got us to the finish line. The album is meant to be listened to in the foreground and all the way through, so we recommend headphones or speakers and setting 17 minutes aside to enjoy!
